History

Some 200 acres of land, located at the foot of Steel Mountain, and fronting on Flat Bay Brook, a famous salmon river, was originally granted to Josephine Bishop in 1886. In 1954, there was a large ranch style house constructed primarily as a Summer residence. The start of business for Steel Mountain Lodge came about with the conversion of the house to a lounge and dance hall in 1963.

The Steel Mountain Lodge property was purchased by Ben and Heather Alexander in 1966 and it was expanded to include six cabin units in close proximity to the lodge. Flat Bay Brook was a haven for salmon fishermen then, as it still is today.

The Alexander family continued to enjoy the outdoor pursuit of hunting and fishing, as well as operating an Engineering and Construction business in Western Newfoundland. The purchase of a float equipped aircraft in 1971 and a permit from Government to establish an outfitting camp deeper into the wilderness saw the construction of Alexander Lodge and the beginning of the Big Game Hunting business for "STEEL MOUNTAIN LODGE".

In 1972, STEEL MOUNTAIN LODGE purchased a Hunting Lodge from Max Butt on Portage Lake. Benabbey Lodge, a new lodge, was relocated and constructed 1/4 mile away. It is situated on a beautifully sheltered sandy beach. From the new lodge, hunters have access to three lakes. It is located at the headwaters of Fishells River.

The Alexander sons, Don and Greg, became more active in the family business and in 1987 advocated expanding Steel Mountain Lodge by purchasing a Big Game operation on Princess Lake. Previously owned by Harvey Sheppard, the lodge was renovated, upgraded, and expanded to more than double its original size.

Each of the three lodges, Alexander, Benabbey, and Princess, can comfortably accommodate 12 persons. Each is equipped with electric lights, interior plumbing, and running water. They are located in prime MOOSE, CARIBOU, AND BLACK BEAR country. They can only be accessed by helicopter or float equipped aircraft.

A full-time cook and expert guides are assigned to each lodge during the hunting season. STEEL MOUNTAIN LODGE remains a family run business, attending to each hunter's every need. It will continue to be operated with the same friendly personal attention for years to come.

Both outfitter and guide drew high marks for efficiency, professionalism, and for giving hunters the confidence to succeed.
